Storyteller. Queer Advocate. Artist.
Maia Mathieu (she/they) is a queer, neurodivergent writer and theatre artist, informed and driven by her intersectional identity, political acuity and passion for social equality. Her academic/advocacy background includes sociology, social policy, gender studies, diversity & inclusion, and public health initiatives — and all this informs her art.
She has extensive experience in creative & academic writing, copywriting & editing as well as social research and strategic communication. Her media background includes digital, print, radio, tv; her theatre background includes acting, directing, sound design and self-taught dramaturgy.
When she’s not working on her art (or just working: Maia is currently Executive Director of Tri-County Women’s Centre), Maia spends her time serving her community on the board of Southwest Nova Pride Association.
Land Acknowledgement
I am currently based in Yarmouth County/the District of Kespukwitk (Lands End) in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Peoples. As an immigrant, I would like to respectfully recognise the Indigenous people who have been here before me, as well as the long history African Nova Scotians whose histories, legacies and contributions have enriched Mi’kma’ki for over 400 years. While the majority of my activist work is centered on the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, I acknowledge my responsibility to learn about and stand in solidarity with the Indigenous and African Nova Scotian communities that I now live alongside.
