‘That’s Mrs. Mathieu to you’.

My other half is American, and I’m Irish-Canadian, and by the time we were married, together since 2003, we’d established quite the paper-trail of visits and a basic understanding of the immigration law of Canada. To ensure that we could stay together, marriage was an important step. As citizens of different countries, there was always going to be a stink made about borders, so, as pragmatists, we legalised our relationship. As romantics, we bought white-gold rings and stargazer lilies and had a wonderful day.

A very personal reflection on international relationships and borders, written for Trinity Frontier Magazine.
